Free to Rip Blu-ray With MakeMKV

MakeMKV is a software app which shreds the copy protection on a disk, provides you with each file it finds, and when you have made your selection, it makes a nice beautiful MKV file, with perfect picture and sound quality. You can then play it with your favourite media player.

What MakeMKV can do?

Out of antipiracy purpose, Blu-ray publishers put complicated copy protections on disc with the aim to prevent the content from being copied for commercial use. In case the protected discs, common Blu-ray ripper software will crash while converting Blu-ray to MKV format. But by taking advantages of MakeMKV, you can smoothly rip Blu-ray to MKV format as it supports decrypting almost all Blu-ray with CSS encryption, RCE scheme, Sony ARccOS protection or Disney X-Project DRM.

Outstanding features of MakeMKV:

Reads and accesses DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of Copy Encryptions.
Preserves all video and audio tracks, including DTS and AAC audio.
MakeMKV can preserve Chapters information.
MakeMKV offers fast conversion – converts as fast as your drive can read data.
It is just extracting the audio and video codec’s and leaving them “as is” which is why it is fast, and also why the files are large (this has nothing to do with them being in an .mkv container).
MakeMKV is Cross-Platform for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

And it is free?

Yes and no. If all you ever want to do is rip DVDs, then it seems that it will let you do this for free, forever. I have never, in the 6 months I have been using it, been asked for payment for ripping DVDs.

However, if you want to rip Blu-Rays, then there is a limited period where you can do it for free. For me, it was a couple of months which is not too shabby. Then it told me to pay up. Eventually I did (reluctantly). It costs about $50, which is why I hesitated for so long before buying (blame my Scottish genes).

Why it seems to favour DVDs, while Blu-Rays get the $50 treatment, I don’t know. Nevertheless, this is a great piece of software, which is well worth the money if you will be ripping Blu-Rays on a regular basis. But if you are a DVD devotee, then this software will stay free for life.

How to Rip/Convert Blu-ray to MKV with MakeMKV?

1. Download and install MakeMKV. The program is completely free during the beta-testing phase, but that may change anytime, so get the software while you can.

2. Put a Blu-ray movie into your PC’s Blu-ray drive, and click the Blu-ray button in the middle of the screen.

MakeMKV can rip copies of your Blu-ray movies to MKV file only on your PC and Mac.

3. MakeMKV will scan the disc to identify the titles to rip.

4.When the software is done, select the location for your movie in the Output Folder menu box, click Make MKV, and wait. Expect an average Blu-ray disc to take at least 30 minutes to rip to your hard drive. It depends.

Editor Note: Although MakeMKV has many obvious advantages, but also has its own limitations are as below:

Output Limits
MakeMKV only can output MVK format. It does not support to output device preset profile format.
When I want MP4, I have to use MakeMKV rip Blu-ray then use Handbrake to convert MKV to MP4. It is a little complex.
DVD/Blu-ray Content Selection
In the software interface, once the Blu-ray or DVD source is opened you will see its contents as a tree structure.
Normally, disc contains different titles (main movie and video clips). You need to select which titles you want to save and what tracks to keep in each title.
The Size of Output Text
I just had one test with MakeMKV software. I ripped a standard DVD and the size of output MKV movie file was up to 6GB.
MakeMKV is just extracting the audio and video codec’s and leaving them “as is” which is why it is fast, and also why the files are large (this has nothing to do with them being in an .mkv container)
Lack of Editing Function
MakeMKV lacks the basic editing functions for editing DVD and Blu-ray disc.
There is no “trim Blu-ray/DVD length, crop Blu-ray/DVD size, adjust Blu-ray/DVD effect, add watermark for Blu-ray/DVD, merge Blu-ray/DVD chapters into one” functions.
